Innovative drone inspections of the Volkerak bridge, with less disruption
Rijkswaterstaat's own news item on photographing the Volkerak bridge by drone before maintenance and building a 3D model to decide where closer investigation was needed. No road closure was required and the survey was relatively quick, and the model is shared with the engineering firm and contractor.
- Drone keeps at least 10 m from the bridge; flight plan agreed with the RWS drone desk
- Rendered dataset about 300 GB; 3D rendering takes several days
- Team plans to maintain 20 bridges over 10 years
⚠ Supplements, not replaces, other inspection methods / AI damage recognition still experimental; no time or cost savings quantified

Smart drone inspection gives rapid view of the condition of groynes
Contractor Heijmans flew drones for Rijkswaterstaat over thousands of groynes on both banks of the Upper Rhine and Waal. It replaces foot or boat inspections that took hours per groyne, and results are scored under NEN 2767 to set maintenance priorities. Wind, water level and no-fly rules over nature and military areas constrained the work.
- 180–190 km of riverbank; about 30 days of flying and about a month of analysis
- RWS drone team has 23 certified pilots, active since 2020
- Pilot must keep visual line of sight
⚠ Groynes must be above water to be visible; wind blurs images / Flights barred over protected nature areas and military zones

Drones take off at Rijkswaterstaat
An IT trade magazine on how Rijkswaterstaat set up a professional aviation unit with a drone team in autumn 2019. It reports incidents on water and oil spills being handled 15–30% faster and describes a docking-station test on the Waal near Nijmegen for 'drone-as-a-service'. Bridge inspection is named as a future use.
- Drone team in place since autumn 2019; Smart Patrol won Computable Award 2019

Inspecting bridges with drones
A bridge-engineering journal article on the history of drone bridge inspection in the Netherlands. Trials for Rijkswaterstaat began over ten years earlier, and repeatable flight paths let damage be tracked over time. Because guideline CUR 117 assumed inspection within arm's reach, a supplementary handbook now sets out what drones can and cannot do per inspection category.
- First Dutch drone bridge inspections over 10 years ago, run by Ingenieursbureau Westenberg for Rijkswaterstaat
- CUR-Aanbeveling 117 assumed arm's-reach inspection and did not cover drones
⚠ Whether drones match close visual inspection quality was long unclear / Publication month taken from the file path (December 2023); no author named

Robot dogs and drones: working more efficiently on a reliable high-voltage grid with more capacity
An interview with TenneT's innovation lead. Every Dutch high-voltage mast must be climbed by a crew of two at least every ten years, but drones can check rust, cracks, paint and damaged parts. At the Wateringen substation a robot dog runs autonomous inspection missions.
- 13,298 high-voltage masts in the Netherlands, each inspected every 10 years
- 270 masts planned for drone inspection in 2024; crews normally need 1,200–1,400 hours for that work
- Robot dog 'Sparky' runs 37 missions at Wateringen; 55,000 hours/year possible at 350 sites (projection)

Use of drones by market parties
Rijkswaterstaat's official guidance for contractors flying near its assets. Structural inspections are flown by market parties rather than its own team, every flight must be reported to the Droneloket, which decides whether it may go ahead, and a 'drone label' compares drone and conventional inspection on safety, traffic impact, CO2 and cost.
- Inspection flights by contractors; incident flights (e.g. ship strikes on bridges) are the exception
- Mandatory reporting via the Droneloket
- Dronelabel compares safety, traffic hindrance, CO2 and cost

Autonomous drones to inspect concrete and steel structures
Eindhoven University of Technology's news on the EU STRUCTURE project. Autonomous drones with infrared, X-ray, radar, RGB and acoustic sensors are to find surface and internal defects on bridges and feed a digital twin. Turbulence under bridges and Dutch no-fly rules near most bridges, with special clearance taking months, are named as obstacles.
- EUR 13 million project; five-country consortium
- Today one maintenance team inspects one bridge per week; goal is one drone inspection per day
- Most Dutch bridges built 1950–1970
⚠ New project; no performance results / Little training data for defect detection; regulation and under-bridge turbulence unresolved
