Ingenieursbureau Klink: 84 drone UT readings on a double-walled diesel tank left in service
Dutch engineering firm Klink flew a UT drone into the interstitial space of a 2,900 m³ double-walled tank at an energy plant and took 84 thickness readings. The inner tank stayed full of diesel and no one entered. No time or cost figures were given, and it was the firm's first such job.
| Owner | Energy plant owner (not named) |
| Provider | Ingenieursbureau Klink BV with Vortex |
| Location | Not stated (energy plant) |
| Aircraft | Flyability Elios 3 with UT payload |
| Sensors | ultrasonic thickness (UT) probe, camera |
Before
Empty and clean the tank, enter through manholes, and use scaffolding or rope access for upper wall rings.
With drones
The drone flew the narrow interstitial space of a 2,900 m³ double-walled stainless tank, so the inner tank did not need emptying.
Outcomes
| Metric | Value | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| measurements | 84 UT readings on 4 scanlines (3 per plate on 7 plates per line) | Reported |
| preparation | no human entry; inner tank stayed largely full of diesel | Reported |
| time / cost | described as far faster, but no figures | Reported |
Caveats & limits
- Manufacturer case study; owner, country and year not stated; no time or cost figures.
- First job of this kind for the provider; a follow-up flight was planned to compare results.
- The interstitial space was very small, though the client said it was not a problem.
